MUZAFARGARH: The state bank of Pakistan has agreed to debit the fraudulent amount to the Punjab government.
In a letter to Punjab’s finance secretary, the state bank has agreed upon transferring the fraud amount which was taken away from NBP Muzzafargarh branch in pension payments.
The finance Secretary has asked the District Accounts Officer (DAO) Anwaar Chishti to convey the fraudulent amount to his office. However, the civil audit had given an inflated figure of 581 million rupees without thoroughly checking the vouched records, whereas the DAO has given a 419 million rupees figure after an extensive 3 months of inquiry that seems more reliable.
In another development, the NAB has further taken two bank officials and one DAO official into custody for investigation. According to sources, the NAB has already taken hold of 100 million rupees worth of property and bank accounts of NBP officials, which in itself is a proof of their involvement in the fraud. If the recovery of the amount is managed, it will be one of the rare cases of plundered public money being returned to the national exchequer.
This fraud was detected by the District Accounts Officer Anwaar Chishti, a young CSP officer and he is continuously pursuing the case as a complainant since the last 3 months. It’s a clear indication of the fact that the system is badly rotten by corruption and inefficient practices.
